It was as quick as a handclap but boy it felt like thunder to my face: a stiff jab and a rocking straight right. It didn’t just stand me up; it swatted the sense out of me!
He stopped and looked up through his furrowed brow and asked, ‘You all right?’ I don’t know whether I nodded or not but he said we’d break for now and next he would show me that double punch technique he just pulled on me.
‘What it lacks in straight-up power,’ he grinned squarely, ‘it delivers in straight-up shock!’
He motioned to his head, swaying it to feint a wobble. ‘A man in shock can’t fight properly, so you land it clean and you should be able to go ahead and finish it.’
He was right: it was the last time I ever stepped in the ring.
